Cerebral Palsy, Mitochondrial Disease
This sweet and big fighter was born as a happy healthy baby. At 7 months his parents noticed he stopped moving. After many Doctor’s visits, Adrian was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. At the age of 4, he was diagnosed with Mitochondrial disease. Mito affects every single organ in the body and is not able to process food and turn it into energy, this causes severe difficulty to sustain life and support growth. At 5 years old he had brain surgery and remained in the hospital for 3 weeks, unfortunately, due to an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, he had to stay 2 more weeks. There were no major changes to his condition after the procedure. In addition to the Cerebral Palsy and Mitochondrial disease, Adrian was diagnosed with Seizure Disorder. By the age of 6 he was having 250 seizures a day, doctors decided to help Adrian to decrease the amount of seizures with a second surgery inserting a device under his skin on the chest wall that will provide Adrian with a therapy called: VNS/Vagus Nerve Stimulation to decrease the amount of seizures he was having daily. Adrian is not able to move any part of his body and head, he is not able to communicate at all and depends on a daily basis on the care of his parents and doctors. Currently Adrian receives Occupation Therapy, breathing treatment and is under several medications to help him remain in a “stable” condition. This amazing boy lives with his parents and 3 brothers. Adrian’s severe condition has created a powerful and strong bond among the family; the family is always looking for alternatives to make sure he has a more comfortable and joyful life. Due to the very reduced space they have at home, Adrian sleeps in his parents bedroom in a crib next to mom. Despite all the restricted space and Adrian’s medical conditions, they all remain positive and hopeful. Sunshine on a Ranney Day and Telemundo Atlanta are happy to create a space for Adrian where he can sleep more comfortably, have a handicap bathroom, a ramp and will help transform the room in the basement for one of his brothers that is giving up his room for Adrian.
