In early-November 2012, we were contacted by Children's Healthcare of Atlanta about a special family who has had more than their share of challenges. Just three months earlier, fourteen-year-old Demetri was diagnosed with Stage IV Burketts Lymphoma. His family had recently relocated from Florida to Atlanta to be closer to an ailing family member. Living in unfurnished rental housing, there was real concern that Demetri, soon to be released from the hospital, would not have a bed to sleep in. Sunshine was there to help! We immediately devised a plan to provide him a comfortable space to call his own. We learned that Demetri is a huge Miami Heat fan, so the theme of his bedroom was easy. Thanks to following companies; Fathead, Milliken rugs, Sports Coverage, Serta mattress, and Holland House furniture, for providing us the goodies we needed to sprinkle sunshine HEAT for Demetri to escape to! In less than half an hour, 8 Sunshine volunteers arrived at Demetri's house, assembled the bed and detailed it with new sheets, pillows, and comforter. We installed a huge Lebron James Fathead. At the informal reveal, the big smiles on the faces of Demetri, his mom and dad and two sisters informed us that we had fulfilled our mission. Demetri's father tells us he hung out in his room the entire evening.
